Russian and Polish are also spoken in Lithuania. Consider taking a Lithuanian language course either before you leave or once you arrive in Lithuania. A good network of contacts in the country will also improve your chances.
Where can you work?
There are various places where you can work. Some of them are following:
  • Major industries: Textiles, Clothing, Fertilizers, Industrial and Agricultural machinery, Oil processing, Furniture Making, Food Processing, Electronic Components.
  • Recent growth areas: Tourism.
  • Major companies: Barclays, Coca Cola, HP, IKEA, Mars, Microsoft, Omnitel, Philip Morris, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Saab, Western Union.
What's it like working in Lithuania?
  • Average working hours: working hours must not exceed 40 hours a week (eight hours a day), comparable with the UK.
  • Holidays: The minimum annual leave entitlement is 28 days. In addition, there are 14 public holidays, including 16 February for the anniversary of the re-establishment of the State of Lithuania and 11 March for the anniversary of the re-establishment of Lithuania's independence.

Applying for jobs
Lithuanians often find work through networking, using friends and personal contacts. The application and interview processes in Lithuania are similar to those used in the UK. A CV and covering letter is the norm, although some large multinational companies with a presence in Lithuania use application forms. This is often followed by selection tests and an interview. Your CV and all letters of application should be in Lithuanian unless otherwise stated.
Lithuanian employers value academic qualifications and language skills, so highlight your fluency in English. They also look for IT competency and business knowledge.

Work experience and internships may be advertised on general job search websites, usually in Lithuanian. It may be possible to negotiate your own form of work placement or internship through a speculative approach or through personal contacts.
    Teaching schemes
Opportunities to teach English at language centres and at international schools and universities are most likely to be found in the capital, Vilnius. You will usually need a degree and qualification such as CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Interviews are usually carried out locally and offers made once you are in Lithuania. Make sure you only sign a contract that includes state social insurance ('SODRA') or you will have to pay your own taxes.
    Casual work
Casual and short-term opportunities are usually sourced through contacts or sometimes via job adverts. Search for jobs in local newspapers. You are unlikely to find information about them whilst outside the country.Visa information
EU nationals do not need a visa or work permit but citizens of non-EU countries may be required to have these documents. EU citizens may travel to Lithuania for up to three months within a six-month period starting from the day of their arrival in Lithuania. Those who wish to stay longer than three months, or who have already been in Lithuania for longer than three months, have to submit an application for a residence certificate to the Lithuanian Migration Department. The certificate is valid for up to five years. If you are not a UK national, contact the Lithuanian embassy in the country where you are currently resident about how to obtain visas and work permits. If you are living in the UK, go to the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in London.

he present-day Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (Lietuvos sveikatos mokslų universtetas, LSMU) is a consolidation of two institutions of higher education, Kaunas University of Medicine and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. Therefore, its achievements and results are related to the history of both establishments. Today the University is the largest specialized institution for health education in Lithuania, offering university degrees, training and research in biomedical sciences.
Facts and Figures
LSMU is a public university of the Republic of Lithuania. The Senate, which is elected by scientists from all subdivisions of the university, is its governing body.
The university includes 7 faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Odontology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Animal Husbandry Technology), 6 research institutes, two animal clinics and the Hospital of LSMU.
Today, LSMU is the country’s largest specialized health education institution with 21,000 members and staff, including over 7,000 students, which offers university degrees, training and research in biomedical sciences.
Practical Skills Are Highly Valued
Students of medicine, odontology and nursing hone their practical skills at the Hospital of LSMU, which is the largest medical institution among the Baltic countries. More than 1,200 highly qualified doctors and 2,400 members of the nursing staff care for over 78,000 patients at the University’s Hospital each year. The entire medical staff values innovative and progressive methods of treatment and diagnostics, which meet global standards.
Pharmacy students gain practical skills at the University’s Pharmacy, which is designed not only to serve the public, but also to be the main training facility of the Faculty of Pharmacy, offering students a broad spectrum of practical knowledge and skills, and providing them with first-hand working experience.
Students seeking to become veterinary doctors obtain their practical skills in large and small animal clinics and operating rooms of the Veterinary Academy, which is housed within a walking distance of the Kaunas city centre on a peaceful campus. Strong academic traditions, experience, modern facilities and a comfortable study environment are combined to provide the best possible education in veterinary sciences.
International Experience and Recognition
LSMU collaborates with more than 140 European, American and Asian universities for study and research purposes.
The University is a member of numerous international organizations, such as the European University Association (EUA), The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), The Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN), Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), World Veterinary Association, and more. LSMU is also a member of the World Health Organization, where it fulfils the role of a collaboration centre for research and training in epidemiology, as well as for the prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic non-communicable diseases.
The study programmes at LSMU meet university education standards applied in the EU countries, and graduates are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and PLAB examination of the General Medicine Council in the UK.
A Choice for International Students
Since 1990, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences has been the Alma Mater of many international students, and 679 full-time foreign students from 48 countries (mainly Israel, Spain, Sweden, Lebanon, Poland, India, South Korea, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom) are currently enrolled here.
The number of studying internationally is increasing every year. International Erasmus students choosing to study at LSMU are mostly from Spain, Italy, Latvia, Belgium and Poland.
Innovative Environment
The University’s Library and Information Centre contains one of the most modern libraries in the EU, and it is listed in the Book of the Most Modern European Libraries published by the LIBER architecture group. The library has both virtual and RFID technologies, and is very popular among foreign countries for its unique architecture and information systems.
Brachytherapy, a modern method of treating oncological diseases such as prostate cancer, is successfully applied at the Hospital of LSMU– the only facility in Lithuania where lung transplantations and very complicated heart and lung surgeries are performed.
LSMU participates in the development of projects that result in new technologies, augmented scientific research and development, renewed and modernized University’s infrastructure: soon to open are the Centre of Modern Pharmaceutical and Health Technologies, as well as a new Faculty of Pharmacy with modern laboratories and auditoriums. STUDY IN LITHUANIA FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Study in Lithuania without IELTS

If you come to Lithuania to study and want to earn some extra money or develop your career, a job here will help you realise your capabilities, and improve and develop your opportunities as well. To be sure that your profession or professional activity is accepted in Lithuania, you can check it in the database of regulated professions. In this database, each Member State of the European Union presents regulated professions in their countries.
From the second year of study students in full-time study mode are allowed to work 20 hours per week in accordance with the legislation of Lithuania.
Are you an EU citizen?
If you come from the European Union (EU), European Economic Community or Switzerland, you do not need to obtain permission to work in Lithuania. The citizens of EU states and the members of their families, who move to Lithuania for more than three months are issued the certificate of a set form by the Minister of the Interior every six months, thereby proving their right to live in the country.
The same regulations are applied to citizens of the countries of European Free Trade Association. The family members of citizens of the EU who are not citizens of the EU are issued EU residence permits.
What if I’m not an EU citizen?
If you are not an EU citizen and intend to work in Lithuania, you will have to get a work permit. This must be done before coming to Lithuania, unless you are exempt from this obligation (more information here).
A work permit, which is valid for two years, is issued if there is no experts in Lithuania who could satisfy the qualifying requirements of the employer. The position held and the company, institution or organisation where the person is employed are indicated on the work permit. Different terms apply if you have a seasonal job or are coming as an intern. The conditions under which the work permit is issued are determined by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, and the permits are issued by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange within two months from the day the application for a work permit was received.
