STUDY IN LITHUANIA FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Applicants should submit their application to the visa section no more than three months and not later than 2 weeks before the departure to the Republic of Lithuania. Indian citizens requesting a Schengen visa have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints). This concerns the applications for the short-term Schengen visas (max. 90 days in 180 days). For subsequent applications within next 5 years the biometric data will be copied from the previous visa application included in the VIS. For more information please read the leaflet or visit European Commission's official web-page. ATTENTION: All visa applicants have to make a prior appointment online. Applicants for National visa D (study purpose) should contact the respective University in Lithuania regarding the appointment time. Please book only one appointment online, as only one appointment per applicant will be valid. Schengen visa applicants are requested to use the Electronic Visa Application Form. Hand-filled applications are not accepted. A print-out of a fully completed and signed visa application with the photograph and supporting documents will have to be submitted by an applicant at the Consular Section of the Embassy of Lithuania in New Delhi during the scheduled appointment. Types of visas Schengen visa: airport transit visa (A) - a visa valid for transit through the international transit areas of one or more airports of the Schengen Member States; short-stay visa (C) – a visa valid for transit through or an intended stay in the territory of the Schengen Member States of a duration of no more than three months in any six-month period from the date of first entry in the territory of the Schengen Member States. A national visa for a single entry (D) shall be issued to an alien, who has been granted a permit of temporary or permanent residence in the Republic of Lithuania by the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior. A national visa for multiple entries (D) shall be issued if alien submits the documents proving that he/she intends to enter the Republic of Lithuania periodically and while his/her main place of residence is in a foreign state and there is no requirement for an alien to get a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania. Consular fees (accepted in Euros only) Airport transit visa (A) - 60 EUR; Short-term visa (C) - 60 EUR; Long-term national visa (D) - 60 EUR. List of supporting documents to be submitted by visa applicants Documents to be submitted by all applicants for short-stay visa (C) (Schengen visa): Completed and Electronic Visa Application Form, one recent passport photo 35×45 colorful, white background. A valid travel document - passport (containing at least 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years, its period of validity extending at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory if the Member States). Valid health insurance (approved list of Indian travel insurance companies you may find below), covering the duration of stay and its copy. The amount of medical insurance coverage – EUR 30 000. An approved letter of Invitation by the Migration Department of Lithuania for the alien to temporarily stay in the Republic of Lithuania or the documents confirming the purpose and conditions of the planned visit to the Republic of Lithuania (hotel booking, tour itinerary etc.). Proof of means of transport. Flight reservation of return or round ticket. If the applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental. Proof of lodging. Hotel reservations, rental of holiday home or campus residence reservation. If the applicant intends to stay with a family member or a friend, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from the host. If applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of lodging in each of them. Proof of financial means Original private bank statement showing movements in the last three months, duly stamped and signed by the bank; Indian income tax return acknowledgment for the last two assessment years; To obtain a multiple-entry short-stay visa, a foreign national must submit documents substantiating of the necessity for such visa to or documents substantiating the circumstances entitling him to a multiple-entry short-stay visa. Consular fee – 60EUR (in cash in Euros only). In addition: If the applicant is employed: payslips for the last three months; employment contract; employers statement on approval for holidays. If the applicant is a company owner or self-employed: certificate of registration of the company. If the applicant is sponsored: proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation by completing a national form of the Schengen State concerned (seethe website of the Member State of destination) If the applicant is retired: pension statements for the last three months; proof of regular income generated by ownership of property or business. If the applicant is a minor: If the minor is travelling with only one parent, written consent certified by public notary of the other parent or guardian, except in cases of a parent having sole custody or guardianship of the minor; If the minor travels alone (without parents), written consent, certified by public notary, of both parents or guardians having custody or guardianship of the minor; Copies of the passport of the parents. If not applicable, birth certificate of the applicant and copies of the ID cards of the parents. Documents to be submitted depending on the travel purpose Business trips: invitation from the inviting company or organisation; cover letter from the applicant's employer; applicant's employer’s in India/other country registration certificate; applicant's employer’s financial documents or Additional documents proving the company’s activities, purpose and conditions of the visit (might be required); Invitation and cover letter must confirm, as a minimum: the applicant's identity; the purpose of the journey (meetings, conferences, training or business related events); and the period and place of intended stay. Journeys undertaken for the purpose of study, research, or other types of internship (for long term study visa please read the section below - National visa D, study purpose): certificate of admission or registration at an educational establishment for the purpose of attending academic or vocational courses, or cover letter from the inviting company; student cards or certificates of the establishment at which the applicant is enrolled. Journeys undertaken for the purpose of tourism certificate of the travel agency confirming the booking of an organised trip or any other appropriate document indicating the travel plans; marriage certificate, if applicant is married and cannot provide evidence of marital status in the passport; copy of ration card, if applicable. Journeys undertaken for the purpose or visiting family/friends: marriage certificate, if applicant is married and cannot provide evidence of marital status in the passport; copy of the ration card, if applicable; certificate proving the existence of family relationship, if applicant is visiting relatives and approved letter of Invitation by the Migration Department of Lithuania for the alien to temporarily stay in the Republic of Lithuania. Journeys undertaken to attend cultural, sports or religious events and for film crews: approved letter of Invitation by the Migration Department of Lithuania or official invitation by the inviting company; entry tickets, enrolments or programmes. For film crews: letter from the film company specifying title, synopsis and shooting locations of film; complete list of names of travelling crew members along with their roles; letter from the agency in Lithuania confirming arrangements for film permits and ligistical suppport on the rgound; certificate of registration with the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association or Film Chamber of Commerce. Journeys of members of official delegations: copy of the official invitation; Note verbale issued by the sending authority(ies) concerned confirming: the identity of the applicant the purpose of the journey (meetings, consultations, negotiations or events held by intergovernmental organisations); the period of intended stay; the place of stay. Journeys undertaken for the purpose of medical treatment certificate from a medical doctor or a medical institution confirming the need for specific medical treatment to be received in Lithuania; official document from the receiving medical institution confirming that the specific medical treatment can be performed and patient be accepted accordingly; proof of pre-payment of the treatment; any other correspondence between the sending medical doctor and the receiving medical institution. Seafarers: Employment contract/appointment letter (showing duration of employment) Copy of the seafarer's working contracts/appointment letter in order to board the ship. Seaman's book Invitation from the shipping company/ maritime agency in Lithuania where the seafarer will join the boat. The invitation must be signed and bear the stamp of the company/agency and include the following data: name and family name of the seafarer place and date of birth, passport number, seafarer's book number date of issue, period of validity of passport and the seafarer’s book the seafarer's position on the vessel (if there are several seafarers, their information can be included in a list, signed and stamped, and annexed to the invitation letter) name and flag of the boat port and date of boarding and disembarking itinerary that the seafarer will follow to arrive in Lithuania/ transit (including date and entry point (airport) to the Schengen area). In the letter of invitation, the shipping company/maritime agency based in Lithuania should indicate the name and address of the Indian agency it is collaborating with and will be responsible for submitting the visa applications. The shipping company/maritime agency based in Lithuania is also required to indicate that it will bear all responsibility for the seafarer upon his/her arrival in Lithuania (including in the event of repatriation) and ensure that he/ she boards the ship. Flight reservation (if applicable) If the visa application is presented by a shipping company/ maritime agency of India, a covering letter of invitation by the agency/company including the list of seafarers applying. Airport transit Visa or other entry permit for the third country of destination. Documents in relation to the onward journey to the final destination after the intended airport transit. Long stay national (D) visa National visa D (work purpose) An alien who is coming to work in the Republic of Lithuania and holding a work permit in the Republic of Lithuania (a work permit in the Republic of Lithuania may be issued by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange at the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania). Completed and signed application form, 1 recent passport photo 35×45 colourful, with white background. A valid travel document - passport (containing at least 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years, its period of validity must exceed the validity period of the requested visa by at least six months). Valid health insurance, covering the duration of stay. The amount of medical insurance coverage – LTL 20 000 (EUR 5792,40) A confirmed Air ticket reservation. A copy of a work permit issued by the Labour Exchange of Lithuania to a foreign national allowing him/her to work in the Republic of Lithuania approved in accordance with the procedure provided for by legal acts; Mediation letter from the Employer in Lithuania. Registration certificate of the company in Lithuania. Documentary evidence of means of subsistence in the Republic of Lithuania (last 3 months original bank account statements/pay slips etc.). Documentary evidence of work experience. Documents, proving professional skills. Consular fee - 60 EUR (cash). National visa D (study purpose) An alien who is a student arriving in the Republic of Lithuania to the consecutive full-time studies a higher education establishment operating in the Republic of Lithuania should apply for a multiple entry national visa D, which could be applied for only at Lithuanian Embassy. Completed and signed application form, 1 recent passport photo 35×45 colourful, with white background. A valid travel document - passport (containing at least 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years,its period of validity must exceed the validity period of the requested visa by at least six months). Valid health insurance, covering the duration of stay, and its copy. The amount of medical insurance coverage – LTL 20 000 (EUR 5792,40). A confirmed Air ticket reservation. Mediation letter from the higher scholastic institution in Lithuania. Registration certificate of the scholastic institution in Lithuania. Means of subsistence ( 150 EUR for every month of planned stay) in the Republic of Lithuania (minimum last 3 months original bank account statements/ pay slips etc.; in case of sponsorship - Affidavit of Sponsorship from parents/relatives and their bank account statements for minimum 3 months). No Consular fee applied. IMPORTANT: The Lithuanian Embassy reserves the right to ask for additional documents. Important information for student visa applicants Students/education consultants/agents are requested to strictly follow the below listed guidelines: Student visa applications are to be submitted personally. At the time of interview applicants should be able to motivate their intentions to study in Lithuania as well as acquaintance with the study program. Non ability of an applicant to communicate in English may lead to visa denial. All visa application supporting documents (air ticket reservation, travel insurance, financial documents etc.) have to be genuine and valid. Visa application containing any fake/invalid document will lead to visa denial. Air ticket reservation itineraries are to be printed on travel agent/airlines letter head or printed from the website. The flight itinerary must show the details of the traveler, flight details, confirmation number. Cancelled air ticket reservations are considered invalid. Airticket reservations will regularly be checked even after issuing visa, and if these are found cancelled, this may lead to cancellation of the visa, while informing airport authorities. Financial documents like bank account statements/ bank certificates etc. are to be submitted in original. Student visa application processing time is 14 days, if additional consultation is not required. Education consultants/Agents found submitting forged documents will be blacklisted. Working hours of the Visa Section: Tuesday and Thurday 10.00-13.00 (for submission of documents) Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11.00-12.00 (for collection of documents) Important notes Reception time is only for submission of visa applications and supporting documents, no consultation on visas will be provided. All documents shall be submitted along with its' copies. No copying services will be provided at the Visa Section. All documents shall be submitted in the same order as per the list of requirements given above. Please prepare carefully your visa application and supporting documents. Any missing information may lead to visa application decline, deny or process delay. Any missing or incomplete documentation will require you to come another time to the Visa Section. Submitting an application There are two application procedures depending on the basis of your citizenship. If you are a citizen of Lithuania, EU/EEA country, or have a right of permanent residence in the Republic of Lithuania or a child, grandchild and great-grandchild of the Diaspora and people of Lithuanian origin and you would like to compete for a state-funded study places, you need to complete an application form of general admission via the website of the Association of Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions LAMA BPO: http://www.lamabpo.lt/turinys/holders-foreign-qualifications . The time to do is between 1st June and 23rd July. If you are a citizen of non-EU and non-EEA country and you want to finance your studies independently with your own funds, you should apply directly to the selected Lithuanian university or college. As rule of thumb, admission to studies is carried out in July. However, foreign citizens planning to study in Lithuania are advised to start application procedure as early as possible due to the fact that document recognition and subject equivalence identification procedures may take up to one month and sometimes longer. Preliminary examinations: You may need to pass preliminary examinations (if required for selected study programmes). For more detailed information please inquire at the higher education institution of your choice. Documents required You must submit all documents to the selected Higher Education institution before the deadline (check the deadline for particular study programme). Regardless of which Lithuanian higher education institution you select, you will probably need all or some of the following documents: a completed application form (each institution has its' own application form) Certificate of Education (Secondary/ Undergraduate degree or other education acquired) including grades* and recognized by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education curriculum vitae (Europass) and a letter of motivation a copy of your passport, certified by a Commissioner of Oaths photographs (3 x 4 cm) a receipt proving that the application and tuition fees have been paid bank statements proving that you are able to pay for the studies and your living expenses while studying in Lithuania * You need to know that all international students must legalise their Education Documents before sending them to a university or college. Documents are subject to legalisation (approved by "Apostille") if they have been issued in a state having acceded to the 1961 Hague Convention. Applicants who have received their education in countries which did not accede to the aforementioned Convention must get double document legalisation: One from the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your home country; The other from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania or the Lithuanian Diplomatic Mission or Consulate in your home country (if the latter are accredited for legalisation procedure). According to the Law on Higher Education of Lithuania, every person who obtained his/her education in another country and is applying to an educational institution in Lithuania must obtain Legal Recognition of the Qualification. Confirmation that you have been accepted: Your admission will be confirmed on the signing of the contract for studying with the higher education institution and you will be issued with a Lithuanian student card (https://www.lsp.lt/en ). With this visa, you will be granted entry into Lithuania and you will be permitted to remain in the country for longer than three months. A National visa may be single entry or multiple entries and will be issued for a period not exceeding one year. A National visa for a single entry (D) is issued to a foreign national who has been granted a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania. A National visa for a multiple entry (D) is issued if: you are a foreign national (non-EU) student arriving in the Republic of Lithuania for studies according to international student exchange programmes or the student exchange programmes drawn up by a Higher Education institution operating in the Republic of Lithuania and a foreign Higher Education institution. you are a foreign national (non-EU) student admitted to study at a Higher Education institution registered and operating in the Republic of Lithuania. In order to obtain a national visa, a student must provide these documents: a valid travel document, whose period of validity must be at least three months longer than the period of validity of a Schengen visa requested to be issued. It must contain at least two empty pages and must be issued within the past ten years; a completed application of the established form for the issuance of a national visa, which you can find here; one 35 x 45 colour photo corresponding the person’s age; a valid document confirming possession of medical insurance for an amount of 5792,40 Eur; a document certifying that (s)he is in possession of adequate means of subsistence and (or) receive regular income to survive in the Republic of Lithuania and has enough resources to return to the country of origin or foreign country to which he has a right to travel. A sufficient level of subsistence funds for a foreign student and for a minor foreign national it amounts to 0.5 of the minimum monthly wage for one month. A sufficient level of return funds amounts to 1 minimum monthly wage. These documents should be translated into Lithuanian or another language specified by a civil servant of the visa service; an application by the inviting establishment, undertaking or organisation of the Republic of Lithuania for the issuance of a multiple entry national visa. This application is addressed to a visa office which the alien is going to apply to for the issuance of the visa. This visa is usually issued in 15 days, unless additional consultations or meetings are required.

Residency

Residency in medicine (further: residency) is a third cycle university studies in medicine, designed for the physicians seeking to acquire or to change the specialization of the professional qualification in medical practice. After the completion of studies the residents receive the residency certificates stating the professional qualification of either clinical specialist or general practitioner.
Residency in odontology is a third cycle university studies in dentistry, which lead the graduates to the certificates of professional qualification of an odontology specialist.
Residency in both medicine and odontology is full-time training, composed of theoretical courses and traineeships/practical placements. All rights and duties foreseen by the residency programme and regulations are applied. This training is arranged at the university, university hospital or institution chosen and accredited by the university.
The duration of residency study programmes is 3-6 years depending on the programme. A year of residency is equal to 40 national credits.

Admission

Admission to doctoral studies in 2016
Vilnius University (hereafter – University) publishes a competition to doctoral dissertation topics in five research areas (annex 1; see the chapter "Dissertation themes") in accordance with articles 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 of the 3rd chapter of Vilnius University regulations on doctoral studies.
Applicants must have a Master's qualification degree or a higher education degree equivalent to it.
The application with all required enclosures must be mailed via regular (air) mail or by an international courier service. E-mailed or faxed applications or enclosures will not be processed. Applicants have to submit to the Department of Doctoral and Residency Studies the following documents by the 27th of June, 15 hrs (inclusive) unless stated otherwise (please check the information on faculties websites):
1. an application addressed to the Rector;
2. a copy of the passport or any other valid identification card;
3. copies of the Master's diploma or of a higher education diploma equivalent to it and their supplements;
4. Curriculum Vitae;
5. a certificate of assessment of academic qualifications issued by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education in Lithuania;
6. a completed questionnaire with a photo;
7. a short description of prospective research project;
8. a list of research works and their copies, conference presentations, works awarded at academic competitions (if there is any);
9. recommendations by two academic referees from the topic of the relevant field of science;
10. 15 Euro instalment voucher (a form of instalment voucher is published at University website (http://www.vu.lt/studijos/doktorantura-ir-rezidentura/doktorantams/priemimas-dokt).

All the documents have to be written in one of the following languages: English, French, German, Russian or Lithuanian.
Doctoral committees determine the requirements for research projects or an examination, or conversation and publicize them on the websites of academic units.
Research projects (if it is set as the method of admission) must be submitted from the 13th by the 23rd of June (inclusive) to Doctoral committees. (Doctoral committees can set their chosen particular dates for the presentation of projects and publicize them on the websites of academic units of the University.) Doctoral committees can require to submit additional documents which are not provided for in Vilnius University regulations on doctoral studies.
On the 29th30th of June or 1st of July, at 9.00 or 10.00 hrs the applicants take an entrance examination or defend their research project, or have a conversation under the Doctoral committee established procedure. The results are assessed by the 10-point scale.
Initiation grade is composed of the grade point average of Master's diploma supplement and the assessment of conversation or entrance examination or research project.
Rector's order on the admission to doctoral studies is publicized on the University website from the 5th of July, 13 hrs.
The agreements of doctoral studies will be signed from the 11th to 14th of July at Department of Doctoral and Residency Studies (Vilnius University, Universitetas St. 3, room 352).
International students admitted to state unfunded doctoral studies in University must pay the stated tuition fees per one academic year: regular studies – 8250 euro and extended studies – 5500 euro.
Doctoral studies begin on the 1st of October.

Study Facilities

Library ­
All students of Vilnius University may to use the university library. Vilnius University Central Library is located in the central building of the old campus. There are libraries in each faculty as well. Lithuanian student card is necessary in order to use the library.
Central Library opening hours:
Monday–Friday  8.00–20.00
Saturday  9.00–16.00
The Library is closed on the last day of every month.
When you visit the Library do not forget
  • your reader’s card (student card). Please produce your reader’s card to the duty officer at the control desk and take a control slip.
Leaving the Library don’t forget
  • to return your control slip to the duty officer; the control slip has to be stamped by the Department you have visited.
Students may search the electronic or card catalogues and order publications in the Central Library Catalogues, ground floor, Room 3 (it is also possible to order publications via computer catalogue from any computerised workplace outside the Library).
Students may borrow books for home use for one month. This period may be prolonged up to three months. Academic books may be borrowed for one semester and the period may be prolonged up to the end of the academic year.
The last or the only copy of the book is not loaned for home use. The book can only be used in the reading room.
In case of the loss of a publication, the reader must return an equivalent publication or pay a tenfold sum.
Books must be returned by the date and time due. Users who fail to return a book by that date may incur a fine.
No further loans will be made to readers who have items that are overdue or with outstanding fines.
Copying at the library
The Library also offers services of copying, scanning, printing, recording of digital data on a floppy disc or a CD etc. More about copying services and prices
Reading rooms
It is also possible to study in the reading room in the library. As in all libraries the noise level must be kept to a minimum. It is not allowed to eat, drink or smoke in the library. Readers are allowed to bring in personal things only in transparent bags. Coats, jackets, cloaks briefcases, handbags must be left in the cloakroom;
Work in the reading rooms is regulated by the Library usage rules
You may use internet in the General Reading Room and Internet Reading Room at Vilnius University Library. Each month Vilnius University students may use internet for 15 hours free of charge. Upon exceeding this limit, a reader can't access internet until the beginning of a new month. By this limitation library aims to provide equal access to workstations for all members of the Vilnius University community.
Students may also get access to Internet at the computer rooms at each faculty.
The students may find the university book shop “Littera” in the M. K. Sarbievijus courtyard in the Old campus. Alongside the books for leisure, books by university teachers and professors, university souvenirs may be find there. Opening hours: 9.00 - 18.00 from Mondays to Fridays and 10.00-15.00 on Saturdays.
Books in English may be bought at the bookshop "Akademine knyga"
